Goals and Objectives

  • Goal: Ensure that freshwater mussel research, management, and educational activities are coordinated, prioritized and are consistent with identified information needs.
  • Objective 1: Convene a periodic freshwater mussel conference in the Northwest to review mussel status and the state of mussel research, management and education.
  • Objective 2: Develop and maintain a list of prioritized mussel conservation and research needs to provide guidance for research and other actions needed to further species conservation.
  • Objective 3: Promote and engage in the protection of quality mussel habitat and in the restoration of poor quality mussel habitat with high potential of contributing to long term mussel conservation.
  • Objective 4: Maintain a public web site and member only listserv that provides information about freshwater mussels and about the Workgroup.
  • Objective 5: Develop and maintain a Northwest database of mussel distribution to help assess mussel status and establish research needs (see Resources for more information).
  • Objective 6: Hold, sponsor or support classes on mussels to support resource managers and researchers and to educate a wide audience.
  • Objective 7: Publicize mussel issues, status, management and research to raise public awareness of mussel needs.
  • Objective 8: Provide or support speakers for requested presentations to organized groups on mussels.
  • Objective 9: Produce or support production of mussel educational material for adults and students to raise public awareness of mussel status and issues.
